SURVEILLANCE IN SOCIETY

Posted by studisullasorveglianza on February 8, 2010

EASST 010 – PRACTICING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, PERFORMING THE SOCIAL. TRENTO, SEPTEMBER 2ND – 4TH 2010.   TRACK 34. SURVEILLANCE IN SOCIETY
The overall aim of this track is to present and discuss how surveillance technologies, such as the Internet, CCTV, biometrics, and performance management systems, work in society. The extent to which such technologies are put to use has convinced some researchers that we now live in a “surveillance society” (Lyon 2001) or a “surveillance
culture” (Staples 1997). Surveillance has, indeed, become an integral part of everyday life, consumption and work.
The growth of surveillance is linked to enhanced possibilities for large-scale storage and processing of personal data that are systematically evaluated, marketed, and used for targeting users and citizens. Moreover, small mobile devices encourage further distribution and democratization of surveillance. Thus, in a world of global economic competition, economic crisis, and fear of terrorism after 9/11, not only the state but also corporations, NGOs and ordinary citizens are carrying out surveillance and are under surveillance at the same time. Often the purpose of these activities is to control the behaviour of others, but the aim might also be related to care, fun and seduction. As a result of these developments, many new research questions have emerged.  Read the rest of this entry »

Ecco come ci possono spiare sul web

Posted by studisullasorveglianza on January 20, 2010

IMMIGRATION, SECURITY AND SURVEILLANCE

Posted by studisullasorveglianza on January 19, 2010

We are inviting papers for the panel - IMMIGRATION, SECURITY AND SURVEILLANCE – European Association of Social Anthropologists CONFERENCE 2010 – Maynooth, Ireland, August

Convenors

Catarina Frois (Centre for Research in Anthropology) - catarina.frois@netcabo.pt
Nils Zurawski (University of Hamburg) - nils.zurawski@uni-hamburg.de

Short Abstract

Some of the most prominent questions that have been gaining interest regarding immigration are related to security as well as surveillance policies and practices. In this workshop we seek to discuss research about migrant populations addressing the equation security-protection-care-danger.

Long Abstract

Immigration has become an increasing field of study in anthropology over the past few years. Looking at Europe, immigration is an important political aspect when considering the absence of frontiers between countries, mobility of persons, politics of inclusion and/or exclusion of – as Robert Castel puts it – definitions of “citizens” or “indigenous”. Internet, navigatori spiati per 7 anni registrata ogni visita a qualunque sito

dii VITTORIO ZAMBARDINO in La repubblica 7 ottobre 2009

Read the rest of this entry »

Database State

Posted by studisullasorveglianza on June 5, 2009

In October 2007  Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs lost two discs containing a copy of the entire child benefit database. Suddenly issues of privacy and data security were on the front page of most newspapers and leading the TV news bulletins. The old line ‘if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear’ was given a very public rebuttal. The millions of people affected by this data loss, who may have thought they had nothing to hide, were shown that they do have much to fear from the failures of the database state.

CPDP 2009: Data Protection in A Profiled World?
16&17 January 2009, de Buren, Brussels

Data protection and privacy increasingly face new challenges posed by technologies and policies as well as society and individual expectations. Identifying and addressing such issues is the main goal of the annual Computers, Privacy & Data Protection (CPDP) conference.

The CPDP Conference aims at bridging policymakers, academics, practitioners and activists to create the most appropriate forum of discussion on key challenges.

It combines informative panels with the latest agenda news from data protection stakeholders and panels with current topics of interests.

The main topic of interest on this year’s CDPD Conference Data Protection in A Profiled World is ‘profiling and automatic computing’. Other topics are: e-voting and data breaches, e-privacy regulations and surveillance, privacy by design and social networks as well as developments in the JHA area. Read the rest of this entry »
