In October 2007  Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs lost two discs containing a copy of the entire child benefit database. Suddenly issues of privacy and data security were on the front page of most newspapers and leading the TV news bulletins. The old line ‘if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear’ was given a very public rebuttal. The millions of people affected by this data loss, who may have thought they had nothing to hide, were shown that they do have much to fear from the failures of the database state.

CPDP 2009: Data Protection in A Profiled World?

Data protection and privacy increasingly face new challenges posed by technologies and policies as well as society and individual expectations. Identifying and addressing such issues is the main goal of the annual Computers, Privacy & Data Protection (CPDP) conference.

The CPDP Conference aims at bridging policymakers, academics, practitioners and activists to create the most appropriate forum of discussion on key challenges.

It combines informative panels with the latest agenda news from data protection stakeholders and panels with current topics of interests.

The main topic of interest on this year’s CDPD Conference Data Protection in A Profiled World is ‘profiling and automatic computing’. Other topics are: e-voting and data breaches, e-privacy regulations and surveillance, privacy by design and social networks as well as developments in the JHA area.

Title: An umbrella talk on recent video surveillance projects for people tracking, activity recognition and object classification.

Abstract: Automated video surveillance has gained momentum in recent years as the key technology for monitoring security and safety of wide areas such as train stations, shopping centres, car parks and others. The events of interest that can be detected in real time include intrusions, border trespassing, abandoning of dangerous objects, carrying-out of harmful or risky activities, and many others. However, the actual application of this technology is challenged by the diverse and variable operating conditions at the sites, and research progress is still much in need. This umbrella talk will present a pool of projects being carried out at University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), to forward the state of this art, namely: a) people tracking in camera networks with view gaps b) people tracking over crowded areas c) non-parametric models for activity recognition and d) feature sets and dimensionality reduction techniques for surveillance object.

Dalla carta fedeltà del supermercato ai dossier dello scandalo Telecom. In fondo non c’è poi molta differenza tra il controllo degli strateghi del marketing sulla nostra spesa e quello effettuato dalla Security dell’azienda di telecomunicazioni sui  propri dipendenti. Sono due aspetti della stessa medaglia: la  necessità di informazioni e la mancanza di fiducia che stanno alla base di quella che viene definita ormai «la società della  sorveglianza».

Paura globale. E visto che le relazioni sociali si basano essenzialmente sulla  fiducia reciproca l’ossessione attuale per una sicurezza che sia   il più possibile garantita – quanto effimera – rischia di farci  sottovalutare il problema e di andare incontro a «un suicidio della  società».E’ uno degli scenari prospettati dalla relazione che il  professor David Lyon, docente della canadese Queen’s University e  massimo esperto mondiale del settore, presentati domenica scorsa alle 11 presso l’Auditorium fondazione di Piacenza e Vigevano, nell’ambito del Festival del Diritto, kermesse dedicata alle leggi che regolano e trasformano la nostra vita. Iniziativa partita ieri in quel di  Piacenza, promossa dall’editore Laterza e dal «Sole 24 Ore», con il coordinamento scientifico di Stefano Rodotà, e che vedrà la partecipazione di giuristi, giornalisti e esperti di ogni campo.  Tra i temi affrontati, che vanno dall’Europa alla famiglia, dalla  salute all’alimentazione, uno dei più interessanti e attuali è forse proprio quello dedicato alla «società della sorveglianza».   «Che non è più un’ipotesi del futuro ma la vita di tutti i giorni», dice Lyon. Il «Grande Fratello», come se lo immaginava Orwell nel suo «1984», è ormai fantasia ampiamente superata dai fatti, e può  giusto titolare un programma tivù.

Italian Group on Surveillance Studies

Il gruppo di ricerca,  Italian Group on Surveillance Studies (IGSS), si è ufficialmente formato in occasione del I° Festival Internazionale del Diritto tenutosi nel settembre a 2008 Piacenza, durante il quale ci siamo incontrati e confrontati con due tra i più autorevoli studiosi della sorveglianza e dei mutamenti delle forme di discriminazione e classificazione sociale contemporanei, David Lyon e Stefano Rodotà.
